Understanding your dependent or independent student status could qualify you for more financial aid.
Module Transcript
The vast majority of students applying for financial aid are considered "dependent" students, meaning that they are dependent on their parents for most of their financial needs.
In order to be considered an independent student by the U.S. Department of Education, meaning that you do not rely on your parents for financial support, one or more of the following characteristics must apply:
- You're at least 24 years old
- You're a U.S. veteran
- You're a graduate or professional student
- You're an orphan or ward of the court (or you were until you were 18)
- You're married
- You have legal dependents other than a spouse
Being classified as an independent student usually will increase your eligibility for aid. Please see the resources section for more details.
